You've heard them all your life. The Ten Commandments. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. But what if everything you were taught about the Ten Commandments was wrong?

That's what Dr. Michael Heiser, a scholar of ancient Hebrew, argues in his new book, "The Ten Commandments: A New Translation." Heiser says that the traditional understanding of the Ten Commandments is based on a mistranslation of the original Hebrew text.

For example, the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" is actually a prohibition against murder, not killing in general. The commandment "Thou shalt not steal" is actually a prohibition against theft, not taking something without permission.

Heiser's new translation of the Ten Commandments is based on the latest scholarship and provides a more accurate understanding of their original meaning.

So, what are the Ten Commandments, really?

Here is Heiser's translation:

  1. I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

As you can see, Heiser's translation is significantly different from the traditional understanding of the Ten Commandments. But Heiser argues that his translation is more accurate to the original Hebrew text.

So, what does this mean for us today?

Heiser says that his new translation of the Ten Commandments provides a more accurate understanding of God's character and his will for our lives.

"The Ten Commandments are not a set of arbitrary rules," Heiser says. "They are an expression of God's love for us and his desire for us to live in peace and harmony with him and with one another."

Heiser's new translation of the Ten Commandments is a timely reminder of the importance of understanding the Bible in its original context.

By going back to the original Hebrew text, we can gain a deeper understanding of God's word and his will for our lives.
