Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion that welcomes people of all beliefs and backgrounds. We are a diverse community of people who are united by our shared commitment to love, justice, and the pursuit of truth and meaning.

This primer provides an overview of our history, beliefs, and practices, as well as resources for those who are interested in learning more. We hope that you will find this information helpful and that it will inspire you to join us on our journey of faith.

Our History

Unitarian Universalism has its roots in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. The first Unitarian church was founded in Transylvania in 1568, and the first Universalist church was founded in England in 1770. These two denominations merged in 1961 to form the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Unitarian Universalism has a long history of social activism and progressive thought. Our ministers have been involved in the fight for abolition, women's suffrage, and civil rights. We have also been at the forefront of the movement for LGBTQ equality.

Our Beliefs

Unitarian Universalists are a diverse group of people, and we have a wide range of beliefs. However, there are some core principles that unite us.

  • We believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
  • We believe in the power of love to transform lives.
  • We believe in the importance of justice and compassion.
  • We believe in the search for truth and meaning.

We do not have a creed or a set of dogmas that all members must believe. Instead, we encourage our members to think for themselves and to come to their own s about what they believe.

Our Practices

Unitarian Universalist worship services are typically led by a minister, who gives a sermon and leads the congregation in prayer and song. We also have a variety of other programs and activities, such as Sunday school, youth groups, and adult education classes.

We believe that worship is not just about following a set of rituals. It is about connecting with our community, with our own spirituality, and with the wider world. We encourage our members to participate in worship in whatever way is most meaningful to them.
